How the rug size calculator works

The calculator compares your room with the standard rug sizes sold in stores. It then picks the size that follows the usual rules for that room and still leaves bare floor around the edges.

In a living room, a rug that holds all the furniture leaves 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) of floor to each wall. The calculator picks the largest standard size that leaves at least 12 inches on every side. If you keep the sofa against a wall, choose front legs on. The calculator then sizes the rug from your sofa, at least 8 inches (20 cm) wider on each end.

Under a dining table, the rug reaches 24 inches (60 cm) past the table on every side, so a chair stays on the rug when you pull it out. Under a bed, the rug sits under the lower two thirds of the bed and shows on both sides. The diagram shows the result to scale, so you can see the border before you buy.

Standard rug sizes

Rugs are made in a few standard sizes, and custom sizes cost much more. In the US, the common sizes are 5 by 8, 6 by 9, 8 by 10, 9 by 12, 10 by 14 and 12 by 15 feet, plus small 3 by 5 and 4 by 6 rugs and round rugs of 4 to 10 feet. In Europe, they are 120 by 170, 160 by 230, 200 by 290, 240 by 340 and 300 by 400 centimeters, and round rugs of 120 to 240 centimeters. The calculator only recommends sizes from these lists.

When the rule does not fit

A rug that is too small is the most common mistake. It floats in the middle of the room and makes the furniture look scattered. When you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.

Open plan rooms have no walls to measure from. Measure the seating area instead, and enter it as the room size. In a narrow room, a runner or two small rugs can work better than one large rug. If the size you want costs too much, put a smaller patterned rug on top of a large plain one.

What size rug do I need for my living room?

Most living rooms take an 8 by 10 or a 9 by 12 foot rug. Leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and each wall, and put at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug.

What size rug for a 12x15 living room?

A 9 by 12 foot rug holds all the furniture and leaves 18 inches of floor on every side. With only the front legs of an 84 inch sofa on the rug, an 8 by 10 foot rug is enough.

Should the sofa be on the rug?

At least its front legs should be. That joins the sofa and chairs into one group. If all the furniture fits on the rug with 12 inches of floor to spare, that looks even better.

What size rug goes under a dining table?

The table plus 24 inches on every side. For a 6 seat table of 72 by 40 inches, that is an 8 by 10 foot rug.

What size rug goes under a queen bed?

An 8 by 10 foot rug, turned sideways and placed under the lower two thirds of the bed. It shows about 30 inches of rug on each side.
