How the tool finds the colors

The tool shrinks your photo and reads its pixels in your browser. It groups pixels that look alike and keeps the five largest groups. Each group becomes one color in your palette. The share next to it tells you how much of the photo that color covers.

The grouping uses a color space built to match how people see color, so two colors that look the same to you land in the same group. That is why the palette shows the paint and fabric you notice, and not stray pixels from a shadow.

Your photo is not uploaded anywhere. The work happens on your phone or computer, and the photo is gone when you close the page.

How to use the palette

Large shares are your base colors: walls, floor and large furniture. Small shares are accents: cushions, plants and art. To change how a room feels, keep the base colors and swap the accents first. That is the cheapest change and the easiest to undo.

A dark color with a small share often comes from shadows, picture frames or furniture legs. Leave it out when you choose paint, but keep it in mind for small accents.

Copy a hex code to match paint online, or take it to a paint store. Paint chips look different under shop lights, so test a sample on your own wall before you buy.

The closest ready palette is a set of five colors that work together. It is a quick starting point when you want a new scheme that still suits your room.

Get a better palette from your photo

Take the photo in daylight with the lights off, so warm bulbs do not tint the colors yellow. Stand in a corner and include the walls, the floor and the largest furniture.

Keep windows out of the center of the frame. Bright sky becomes a large white group that is not part of your room. A photo of a room you admire, from a hotel or a magazine, works too when you want to copy its colors.

Palette from photo questions

How do I get a color palette from a photo?

Upload the photo on this page. The tool reads it in your browser and shows its five main colors with hex codes in a few seconds. Tap a color to copy its code.

Is my photo uploaded or stored?

No. The photo is processed on your device and never sent to a server. Closing the page removes it.

What is a hex code?

A hex code is a short name for one exact color, such as #A27B5C. Paint brands, design apps and websites accept it, so it is the easiest way to match a color.

Can I match the colors to real paint?

Most paint brands have a color matching tool that accepts a hex code and suggests the nearest paint. Always test a sample on your wall, because the light in your room changes how a color looks.

Why does my palette look darker than my room?

Phone cameras darken shadows and warm bulbs tint colors. Take the photo in daylight with the lights off for a palette closer to what you see.

Can I see my room in a different palette?

Yes. remyhomeai redesigns a photo of your room in any of its 39 palettes and 7 styles, and keeps your walls and windows where they are. You get 3 free designs at signup, with no card required.
